definitely some road spray in your face this morning. be careful and watch the speeds there. coming across the american legion bridge, no trouble spots to report traveling between 270 and tysons corner. 395 northbound leaving duke street, lanes are open. 66 east had accident activity at glebe road that has been pulled to the shoulder. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. -timetraffic. >> thank you. today, former penn state coach jerry sandusky will be sentenced on 45 counts of sexual abuse. >> he spoke out from behind bars to a student-run radio station at the college. he declares his innocence. melanie alnwick is live with the latest. >> reporter: jerry sandusky was convicted in june of molesting 10 boys over 15 years. there will be a hearing first to determine if he qualifies as a sexually violent predator. that would have some effect on his sentencing. and then the judge will hear from victims and sandusky

himself before deciding the former football coach's prison sentence. sandusky's lawyers say he will address the judge at today's sentencing hearing and assert his innocence. during his sensational trial for serial child sexual abuse, prosecutors said the former football coach and founder of the second mile charity used his fame in the community to attract victims. yesterday, sandusky spoke a penn state radio station. he says he has been wrongfully convicted and he hopes some good will come out of all of this. >> some vulnerable children would could be abused my not be as a result of all the publicity. that would be nice but i'm not sure about it. i would cherish the opportunity to become a candle for others as they have been a light for me. they can take away my life. they can make me out as a monster. they can treat me as a among sister but they can't take away my heart n my heart, i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> reporter: sandusky only refers to his victims as accusers and claims he lost the

year-old bryan glenn. police have not yet identified the body but friends of the family tell us it is bryan. the teen disappeared one week ago. a medical examiner will officially identify the body in the coming days. fear grows as the number of cases in the deadly meningitis outbreak continues to rise. the latest numbers from the cdc show eight people have died with a total number of cases at 105. health officials in maryland confirm two more cases there for a total of five cases. fox's jonathan siri has the latest. >> pain, to manage the pain. >> reporter: the centers for disease control and prevention has a bold warning. 13,000 americans might be at some risk in a meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroid injects for back pain -- injections for back pain.

until mid- to late october because of that long incubation period. jonathan siri, fox news. turning to politics now, tim kaine and george allen faced off no a second time in the race for the u.s. senate. the aarp and the virginia league of women voters hosted the debate. they touched on issues that included win's health, defense cuts, entitlement programs, illegal immigration and economy. the race could determine the balance of power in the u.s. senate too. >> it was good. it was the fastest hour in show biz. we covered a lot of ground and i think are n a civil but clear way, showed that we have some differences. i think that is good for virginians. >> if he wasn't in the most partisan job jetting around the country, giving speeches, raising money in san francisco to new york city while trying to raise taxes on virginians,

the bulls got the upper hand during a bull fighting festival in colombia. dozens of people went into the ring to take turns taunting or chasing a pool on foot or on horse back. here is a surprise, 30 people were injured, 10 of them are considered serious. some of the participants did enter the ring intoxicated. so they got in the ring with the bulls, running around voluntarily and some were drunk >> that leads to all kinds of crazy stuff. not a surprise there. a top leader of the mexican drug cartel is believed to have been killed during a gunfight

with mexican marines. the marines say the shootout happened in northern mexico. there is strong evidence that one of the men killed was known as the executioner. detroit's police chief is out after a sex scandal. ralph godby retired effective immediately. he was already under investigation for a reported sexual relationship with a subordinate. this is the second time since he became chief in 2010 that he has been aused of this. he was detroit's fifth police chief in four years. mayor says the city will conduct a nationwide search for his replacement. a member of the d.c. council with a financial challenge. can she live on $30 a week? >> we'll explain coming up next. first, we'll talk about weather and here is gwen. >> not if she is going to a mall, that's for sure. the good thing is the wet weather will not be sticking around. that wanted warm-up is on the way. more details after the break.

airpt this r. 48degrees at baltimore as we du hagersto and 43 at martinsburg. so the temperatures still very much on the cooler side as we get up this morning. freeze warning in effect until 9:00 for parts of the allegheny front and the potomac highlands. they will have a freeze warning in effect for wednesday night. a freeze warn -- a frost warning i should say for that area as well as temperatures remain well below seasonal. we just saw that white stuff hitting areas of west virginia. so a northeast chill. the jet stream well to the south of us. dim not normal. yesterday's highs up to 20 degrees below the seasonal average. much cooler than they should be. but we are getting that cooler air burning in from canada from the north and this ridge of high pressure building in. today, we are going to still be pretty much on the cooler side actually few degrees warmer than we were yesterday so it won't be all bad. we are heading for a high of 58 degrees today versus 55

that cats have nine lives still stands true at least for one kitten in maryland. she required quite the rescue yesterday after she was found inside the engine of a car. >> the drive says he heard something whining in his hood and had to call the fire department for some help. will thomas takes it from there. >> reporter: prince george's county firefighters on the scene of a rescue. this footage captured the tense moments as they tried to make a save. the man driving this car knew something was wrong. >> i kept hearing a chirping under the hood and i drove a little bit and i drove some more and i said that is a cat. >> reporter: listen carefully. you will hear it too. >> lifted up the hood and i seen a kitten inside of the hood. >> reporter: so he called 911. firefighters showed up to this beltville parking lot and tried to help. >> we determined that we're going to need a jack. we went across to the local maintenance shop, got a jack, jacked the vehicle up and then

mitt romney campaigns in iowa. george allen and tim kaine squared off in their second debate in the race for the u.s. senate. the candidates went at it last night in richmond. they covered a wide range of topics. allen again tried to portray kaine as a would-be tax liker. kaine repeatedly cited deficits. >> i think cain won because allen didn't answer some questions about privatizing social security, didn't whether he or the trentt with one statement, repeated it over again that allen said in the senate that i want to ram their soft teeth down their whiney throats. that isn't the bipartisan patina that you want. >> the two have been running

neck and neck for nearly two years but kaine appears to have tan the lead in recent polls. jerry sandusky is speaking out proclaimings he was innocent and was given atrial based on pawls accusations denying he committed any of the, quote, disgusting acts. he will be sentenced later on today in a pennsylvania courthouse. melanie alnwick is live in the fox 5 control room with more. >> reporter: legal experts say, given the nature of the charges and the number of the crimes, that jerry sandusky is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. still, he is not going to jail without a fight. former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky speaking out from his jail cell ahead of these his sentencing on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. >> they can take away my life, make me out as a monster, they can treat me as a monster but they can't take away my heart. in my heart, i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> reporter: in june, sandusky was convicted of abusing 10

boys over 15 years. the case led to the firing of legendary football coach joe paterno who died from lung cancer in january. in the audio statement, the 68- year-old sandusky says he will continue to fight. >> we didn't lose to proven facts, evidence, accurate locations and times. anything can be said. we lost to speculation and stories that were influenced by people who wanted to convict me. we must fight on unfairness, inconsistency. >> i anticipate he will say he is innocent. he doesn't feel we had nearly enough time to properly and adequately prepare his defense. >> reporter: prosecutors saying some of the molestation victims will speak as well. >> could be as many as a half dozen, we'll see. it depends on how they feel and how they respond to the moment. >> reporter: that hearing is

supposed to start at 9:00 this morning. you may remember along with sandusky, two former penn state administrators were arrested last year as well. they were charged with lying to the grand jury and failing to report suspected child abuse. they are also awaiting their trials. >> thank you very much for that report. pepco and its union reached a tentative contract agreement likely averting a strike. the utility company says the agreement is subject to a vote by the workers union. both sides have been at an impasse for months. the search for a a missing teenager in our area comes to a tragic end. that is coming up next. plus, one couple's trip to a yard sale landed them in the center of a drug raid. what they purchased wasn't what they thought it was. stay with us.

an update now to a story we first brought you at this same time yesterday. montgomery county police shot a man on woodland drive in silver spring after a brief standoff. the man later died. he was identified as tracy woodfor. he called 911 and told dispatchers he had a gun and wanted to die. officers northed with him for almost two hours before they say he came at them with a gun. that is when they shot him. police later determined the gun was just a replica. a saddened in the search for a missing fairfax county teenager. friends of bryan glenn tell us his body was found in a wooded area yesterday. police have not yet officially identified the body. the medical examiner will positively identify the body and determine the cause of death. a couple is hue mail yitd to find themselves at the center of a drug raid. they bought a bush, what they thought ways bush at a yard
